Gold is found mostly in volcanic rocks, but also be hosted in sedimentary or metamorphic rocks.
It occurs mostly in quartz veins that cut the host rock, and the host rock is usually altered to kaolinite (a type of clay), sericite (a white mica), and quartz.
So hints for a simple prospecting in hills or mountains while hiking, look for volcanic rocks, that are cut by quartz veins, that have altered the rock (change the mineralogy and hence the color). If it is red and yellowish or orange brown, it is a good sign, if it contains intense green color (copper oxides) and red color (hematite) is an excellent sign.
If it just a plain white quartz vein, that it may or may not have gold.
If you find pyrite (fools gold) it can be a good sign, since in many cases it may contain gold (but not always).
If you want to pan for gold, then you have go to a river bed and try your luck.
