Some people have told me you have to drop the rear axel, some say just gas tank and still others tell me there's a panel in my back floor board. Can someone please help me? If you know alot about GTA's (special edition Trans Am) I would love it if you could e-mail step by step directions b/c I am going to try to replace it myself. lolee2771@hotmail.com

I personally have never done one of these, but according to AutoZone, you DO have to remove the rear axle.

Usually it is not nessesary to drop the rear axle, but if you want your car in prisine condition you may consider it. I have repalced these and they are a pain. The problem is trying to drop the tank low enough to get the filler neck out of it's cavity. You can pry and beat it out, but you will most likely bend a few of the pinch weld seams under the car by the filler neck. It really isn't a detailed process.
1. Jack up the rear of the car as high as you can
2. drop rear exahust
3. Remove anything else in the way
4. Remove fuel filler neck fasteners & Gas cap
5. Remove fuel tank straps
6. Remove fuel tank hoses and electrical connections
7. Remove fuel tank
8. Replace pump
9. Installation is revers of removal

you will more than likely, have to lower the rear end down to gain clearance next exhaust has to come of.I wouldn`t attempt it unless car was on lift.
