Car makers build powerful cars because there is a market for them. Its as simple as that.
The government has nothing to do with it.

People love MUSTANGS.

I sell them & people buy them.
Most of The people that buy them would rather have the more powerful (300 HP ) GT with the fuel consuming V8 than the V6 with 200 HP.

It's a matter of personal prefferance.
Some people like power & don't mind that they will spend more on fuel.
Some people would prefer to buy a less powerful vehicle & put le$$ fuel in the tank.
The government cannot keep people from spending their hard earned money any way that they choose.

The goverrnment DOES promote & reward people for more environmentally correct vehicles & the use of alternative fuels

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

By the way .... I have had to turn down hefty depo$it$ on the even MORE powerful (500 HP) Mustang Shelby GT 500........just because Ford won't give me any more than 3 of them!!!!
We had a waiting list of people wanting to buy them, but Ford won't build all that are wanted.

The overlooked item is the ability to get up to speed quickly. That's NOT to say burning tires. Safe passing is also a consideration.
A human element is the fact that a car is an extension of the drivers personality. I have been accused of driving a "look at me" car/truck. but I reject that to some degree as I buy for longevity and the love of the "machine". The manufacturers do try to make their "line" of cars/trucks to as many people as possible.
Today fuel is such an issue that much will change and quickly too!
Like my wife, what is ugly at the start, is very pretty now!

Actually the speed your car can go is LIMITED to what you could do if u put a chip in it and tuned it right....You have no idea what pure power some cars/trucks could achieve.....and people buy the cars and they make GOOD money off of em'. why wouldn't they sell em? And how can the gov. try and sell enviromental/economic cars when a Tahoe/Escalade/Yukon transports most of em around?
