Our backyard is park like with trees, water, etc. so we have a natural cockroach problem. We have 3 dogs and a 4 year old so I'd like to avoid the traditional exterminator. Any ideas?

If you live in a warm climate year-round, get yourself some geckos to place in your habitat- they are voracious roach eaters.

you wont ever get rid of them without an exterminator!they have stronger poisons than we can buy!but after their poisons dry i dont think they will harm your dogs or children!try calling them and telling them your problem, and tell them you njeed something that will be safe because of your children and dogs!
