So far all the answers posted have been VERY unhelpful. Most people think a fish is just a stupid thing that swims around in circles. NOT TRUE - they are living creatures and have personalities - some species have limited ones, but some are vivid. eg - A goldfish has such little personality that it only looks at you to be fed when you approach the tank. Then look at Oscars and saratogas - when you approach their tank they will show that they want to see you, this is evident after a couple of weeks of ownership as they will follow your finger along the glass fanning their tails in a 'courting style' motion. When you put your finger in the tank they will give it a playful bite. when you give them a goldfish snack they will almost dance with their vigorous fanning while they look at you the whole time they are devouring their treat. This will tell an intuitive person that they are happy.
As for a crying fish, they do not have tear glands and so do not cry, though they can show signs of distress or unhappiness. - most times this will be due to the fact that their water conditions are making them feel unwell, or that they want to have a variety in their diet. Depending on the type of fish you have they may want meat or a more nutritious flake food. Check your chemical levels, your dietary feed, and if you can - get them a partner. Hope this helps.

Their eyes get red, they blow their nose a lot, and their voice breaks up when they speak to you. Dont let them watch the soap operas any more....too sad.
