pre-emergent; check the label to make sure your plants are listed
I agree treflan is a pretty safe bet in most beds, although it can effect annuals, and keep perennials from spreading as fast (which in most cases is a good thing)
post emergent; round up
DO NOT USE WEED B GONE IN FLOWER BEDS Read the label and it will also leach.

What you need is a pre-emergent product to apply before the weeds pop. Treflan is a commercial product but can be bought under the name preen. Dow makes a nice granular called snapshot if you can get some.
Liquid pre emergents Like Surflan (oryzalin) are orange and can be mixed with post emergent products like Round-Up or anything else you spray to kill weeds. the mixture keeps weeds from coming back while killing whats there. When spraying weeds , dont do what most do and cut down the weeds then spray. Thats backwards as you want to get anything you spray on as much leaf surafce as possible to kill it. After It dies, then chop em down...
Be careful when selecting a weed control, as round up burns everything it touches in the garden, and products like Weed b gone for lawn weeds will smoke the flowers because it considers you garden flowers weeds.
they do make profesional Over the top liquid concentrate products that will selectively kill grassy weeds growing in and around shrubs amd flowers. PBI gorden Makes one called ORNAMEC that is pretty good.
Next , mulch helps to keep weeds down and soil temps a bit cooler if you can.

White vinegar is good to kill weeds and grass. This is a natural method and will not hurt the environment. You can spray it heavily on the growth or pour it from the bottle. Try to keep it off your beautiful plants, as it will kill them too. The best part about vinegar is that, unlike Round-Up, it will not stay in the soil for a long time. You will have to use it several time during the growing season. Try not to use it when you know there is going to be rain or when you are going to water soon.

Anger, just go out on your lawn early every morning like 5am, and scream at it for like 5min, i mean really let that lawn have it. By the next growing cycle your weed problem should be history.
