I close my eyes & picture a black screen while listening to my breathing & if I'm still having trouble I'll let the ebony curtain begin to swirl with slowly revolving colored splashes that I try to follow with my eyes. That sometimes tips & tricks the mind into going to sleep. I suspect that the eye movement might trigger the brain into thinking it's about to enter a real REM cycle, but I have no proof.
I know I didn't explain it very well, but I hope you get the idea & I hope it helps.

It's not what you should be focusing on, it's what you should be forgetting about.
When laying in bed there are ways to ignore a thought, and to bring up a less stressful idea.
When you are breathing and you think of something, open your eyes, and focus on opening your eyes. Switch back to noticing your breathing, and when something else comes along, pay attention to how comfortable you are. When your paying attention to your comfort, and an idea comes up, pay attention to your breathing.
Keep alternating like this, and even coffee, drugs, and alcohol will lose their ecstasic power in under 30 minutes.

On the deep darkness behind the eyelids, after taking care of shutting off any lights or brightness that could obliterate such darkness.

Try NOT to focus. If you are concentrating on something then it will probably prevent you from going to sleep.

Meditate. Focus on questions you need answers to. Focus on your prayers and seek knowledge before going into your dream state.

i have one of those sleep machines that make different noises. Listening to the ocean or the hearbeat or the birds is very relaxing soothing and puts me right to sleep.

Not an idea. Try to think of something pleasant and uncomplicated. Try not to get your mind busy, e.g., thinking about what you need to do tomorrow.
