People have grown up thinking that there are 9 planets in the solar system. Now, the scientific community are undecided as to whether there are 8,9 or 12 planets in the solar system. It means that there is a difference in opinion as to what a planet is, and it causes chaos in scientific circles.

Also, think of all the school text books which have become incorrect, and also the confusion which will occur at pub quizzes if someone dare asks the question "how many planets are there in the solar system?"

Personally, I'm thrilled. I've thought Pluto wasn't a planet for years and it's finally been grouped with the other Kuiper bodies.

I know some people who are saddened by this change.

The decision has made an emotional impact.

It doesn't bother me in the least. We discover new things and change our perspective accordingly.

People do seem to care though... on the nightly news the other night I thought Brian Williams was very disappointed. The whole story was about "poor Pluto"; they even showed footage of the Disney cartoon character Pluto. Dear Lord, I hate the media.

It's a little disturbing actually. I grew up my whole life thinking that there are 9 planets in our solar system, and now one is not a planet anymore. We only have 8 planets in our solar system! That's the kind of thing that screws up obsessive compulsive people- watch there will be massive breakdowns in the next few weeks!

Yes, I definatly care. It is a great day for astronomers in that now we finally have a system to support why we call things planets. We have been waiting for this ever since the days of Copernicus.

There is nothing different about the place between now and a week ago. It's just a label that we made up for it...hopefully this issue won't be drug out any longer than it has to be.
