Having lived in south Florida, this is common in elementary schools. I was going broke buying that special shampoo until I got the bright idea to use the green dog shampoo that kills fleas, ticks, and lice! And it worked...no lie. Also, if you rinse your hair after shampooing with vinegar/water mix, it makes the eggs swell and easier to comb off the hair.

My advise is never use these lotions, they are expensive and do not work!
Wash the hair and leave the conditioner in, then get a fine tooth comb or a nit comb and go through the hair for about half an hour evey day for 2 weeks, after 2 weeks carry on doing so every 2 - 3 days. You need to be doing it this often so that you get the babys out before they are mature enough to grow any more eggs. Even when the lice are gone still do this at least once a week to keep them away. If you let slip and forget to do this they wil come back!!! Also try adding a few drops of aloe vera or tea tree to the mormal shampoo!

Good Luck, hope you get rid of the little blighters

The best thing I have found is Tea tree oil and a nit comb, rub the tea tree oil into the hair and then spend at least an hour combing through the hair with a nit comb wipe the comb on tissue occasionally. Hair conditioner also works in conjunction with a nit comb, check every seven days as this is usually the time span for any missed eggs to hatch. This method although time consuming has just worked on my child.

Omg how much?!
The nit lotion doesn't ever work very well, nits quickly become immune.
The best way to be rid is to wash your hair, coat with conditioner and get a nit comb and comb section by section. The nits have to be so old before they can lay eggs, you'll have dragged them out with the comb before they get to that age.
You'll need to do this every night for about 2 weeks, treat the whole family and wash your bedding every couple of days.
You've got me itching now!!
Good luck =)
p.s. once you have got rid of them using tea tree oil shampoo or a spray will stop them coming back, they hate tea tree!

go to your Dr and get prescription strength lice shampoo. You have to wash everything in hot water and wash and spray what you can not throw in the washing machine.. Spray the mattress and turn it over so that you are not sleeping on the spray. Also throw away any pillows and start new. Then be sure you pick every single nit on your head. Wash coats and hats and jackets and shirts and scarfs. any clothes you have warn. Throw your combs and brushes away and start new. Do not inhale the spray and leave the room after you spray it. Contact with the spray can cause you harm. I had two strokes from prolonged contact with the spray permethrin. I think that is how its spelled and also had some painless bleeding under my skin. Bruises all over from a third contact took me a time or two to figure out what was causing it.

There is an epidemic of head lice in my little sisters school, its been going on for the past THREE years, every time my mam gets them out of the child's hair, she catches them again from one of her friends... Its so frustrating.
At first she tried all the hair cremes and lotions, but nothing worked, so she stopped using them, and just fine combed her hair every night after putting conditioner in it, its the only sure thing that works. You have to do it every night for about a week, make sure you get everything. If you do that, the lice will be gone, and hopefully you won't catch them again...

wet combing with fine tooth comb every day for about a week is the only way. Nit lotions don't work as the lice and nits get immune to them.

All insects have a waxy waterproof coating, because they breathe through tiny pores in their skin. If they weren't waterproof they'd drown when it rained.
All you need to do is use ordinary mild shampoo, but leave it on for 4 minutes. Rinse, and you'll find all the adults are dead and just rinse out.
Then condition the ends if the hair is long, comb, then go through with the nit comb.
Then rinse out the conditioner. You'll find the soaking, soap and conditioner have unstuck the glue that sticks them to the hair so they just slide off.
You repeat this every other day for 2 weeks to clear an infestation, then check them every day when they come home from school.

Don't rely on the lotions - they don't work! Invest in lots of conditioner, a metal nit comb and wet comb the little horrible crawling b@stards out. It'll take about three to four days to remove lice, then two weeks before you're all clear. You'll have to comb the eggs out as well. I've used vinegar as well, as its supposed to kill the eggs (watch out though, putting it on a sore scalp). Good luck.

Your doctor can give you a prescription for an effective de-lousing medication.

During the treatment, make sure you follow the directions correctly and you'll have to thoroughly vacuum your house in addition to washing bed lines, etc. in very hot water. If you don't do a top to bottom house cleaning, the lice will return over and over again.
