Stripping the membranes is where a health care provider will separate your bag of water from the cervix, it is not intended to break your water, however, it may. It may also cause infection, and may be painful for some.

It sometimes helps woman to start labor quicker.

I know that it didn't work for me on my second child when I had it done, and it is uncomfortable.

When I had it done it was "sweeping" and it's basically done near or at your due date if your not really showing signs of going into labour. It's obviously an internal thing and kinda like having a smear (but a bit different obviously), is quite uncomfortable but it's worth a try if you want to try to get things going. (Sorry - not sure of the correct medical phrases). Good luck.

They scrape at your cervix to soften it up. Not overly comfprtable...can cause some bleeding(nothing to worry about..its your cervix)

they use their fingers to help your labor start/progress, and it hurts something terrible...the previous poster was talking about them breaking your water which is different, and its not "supposed" to hurt, but i've never had it done so i don't know if it does or not
