Some people are saying that France is trying to stand out as an international force because lately their image as a world power is decaying. Also Lebanon was a former French colony and there is still strong French influence in the region. So in this case France is helping out it's protege from the middle east.

France has historic ties to Lebanon, and would probably like to be seen as a world peace-keeping power, and exercise influence on an old colony. I hope that the French army and the Jews git into it.......I'll support France. F*ck Israel! Israel causes a lot of the problems in the region.

Because they are members of the UN and it is expected of them. The Brits and the Yanks (as you call them) are in no position to get involved other than logistically or in providing intelligence as that would only inflame the situation.

I am still trying to understand why anyone pays attention to France. After losing it's empire and surrendering so often how can they be expected to take any stress. They spent 28 years letting Hezbollah build up weapons in Lebanon are they looking to do it again?? I have to assume Iran pays well to pretend to be blind as well as dumb. France excels at that. I think the Italians will get most of the work in that deal.

France, and in particular, Chirac, have had a pretty rubbish time over the last couple of years and their reputation as an international power is in tatters. Chirac is betting that his role in this part of the Middle Eat Crisis is going to improve his legacy, somewhat. Providing it doesn't all go ****-up, that is. If it does, he'll look even worse. It's a gamble, with a lot of people's lives.

By sending troups, both Italian and French companies will be granted contracts by way of building and reconstruction in that particular region. There's nothing altruistic about it - it's a capitalist endeavour in pretty much the same way that Iraq and Afgahnistan are.
