Prefer Pentium over Celeron, need CD burner/DVD-rom (DVD burner optional), wireless built-in.

Well, there's really no such thing as a laptop, or any computer, for that matter, that isn't obsolete within 6 months.. but, you're not likely to get a good new one for $500.. but, you can get good puters that will last for quite some time..
For the price range, you're looking at a used system, just be sure that you have a trustworthy dealer.. Or, go to www.tigerdirect.com

for around $500 there is not much with a Pentium M. in that price range and below you will find mostly notebooks with Celeron processors.

a pretty good Acer notebook for $598 with a Pentium M740 and DVD-writer is this one

http://www.dellauction.com at this moment, i'm on a latitude c610 with a 1 gigahertz cpu, 256 megs of ram, cd burner/dvdrom , an intel radeon grahics chip and a 40 gig hard drive. cost @ $400
