A hardtail has no rear suspension,, you ride straight from the frame to the tire,,,a soft tail does have a suspension,,, a hardtail on a long ride will make you realize that you have several parts inside your body that you didnt even know you had,,,,because they are ALL gonna be sore,,,,but if ""looking cool"" , means more to you than bodily comfort,,,by all means,,,thats the way to go !!!

hard tail has clean lines and no forgiveness, a soft tail tries to duplicate the clean lines and add a little forgiveness in, other bikes don't worry about the lines and you can see the forgiveness (shocks). It's one of those compromise things, do you want looks, comfort, or something in between
Love john L 's answer - fits right in - when she's young it's the lines that are important, after you get a little older you begin to appreciate the cushions a bit more

RE:
What's the difference between a hardtail and a softtail?
I'm a motorcycle novice and I hear a lot about hardtail and softtail but don't know what they mean.

Some soft tail designs have hidden suspension links and the shocks and springs are not easily visible. They appear to be hard tails. Some times a suspension link to the rear hub can be added to a hard tail frame. This is old school. Hard tail no suspension soft tail suspension.

Dr. Biker gave you the correct answer, so give him the points. He's no novice rider.
I own the softail, it's a smooth ride.

hardtail has no shocks, so you lower the tire pressure to about 10 pounds and use a solo seat with springs. The big advantage is that a ridgid frame[hardtail] puts the power to the rear tire RIGHT NOW.And its a cleaner look. Been riding ridgid frame choppers for 20 years and still love them.

A hardtail has no rear suspension....a softail has a rear suspension where the shocks/springs are hidden so it has the clean look of a hardtail but the ride of a modern bike.

A softtail has a rear shock & suspension, whereas a hardtail does not and relies mostly on a very fat rear tire for bumps.
