I know this sounds funny, but after the uterus is removed, what is done to close up the hole left by where the cervix was. Is the surrounding muscle pulled together or something? Does it shorten the lenght of the vagina at all? I have to have a hysterectomy done soon and I was wondering about this. Never thought to ask the dr.

It is sewn shut.

I had a complete hysterectomy in January this year. This was one of the first questions I asked too!

I was told it doesn't shorten it, but I guess it would depend on the doctor and to what degree it is closed. When I went in for the 2 week and 6 week check ups, I was told that there were still some stitches there, but healing well.

I'm completely healed now, of course, and haven't had any problems.

Interesting question. I'm sure the doctor must do SOMETHING to prevent you from being open all the way up to your throat!!!
