Three men rent a hotel room for $90. Each pays $30 each. The Manager notices that the room should've cost only $75, so he gives $15 back to the customers. They tip the Manager $3 and split $12 between them ($4 each).

So they each paid $26 (original $30 - $4 credit). Total paid is $78 ($26x3) + the $3 tip to the Manager. That's a total of $81.

What happened to the other $9?

Dude, you really are confused, arentcha?

You say "so they paid $26" when its actually $25 ($30-$4-$1)
So, they actually paid $25*3 = $75
Manager's tip = $3
Refund = $12
Total = $90

They each paid $25 (original $30 - $5 credit). Total paid is $75 ($25x3) or ($90-$15) + the $3 tip to the Manager. That's a total of $78.00

Then they split $12 between them ($4X3).

Originally paid $90-$78 actual paid out =$12 leftover (divided among the 3 guys)

The problem starts in your second paragraph.

They each paid $30, got $5 back, tipped $1 for a total of $78.

Note that includes the tip. ($81 is a red herring)

So now if you were to ask, what happened to the other $12 (90 - 78) the answer is, they got it back as a refund.

After refund each man paid $25 for the room, $1 for the tip and pocketed $4 for himself.

That equals $30 per man

$90 total

They each paid $25 (original $30 - $5 credit). Total paid is $75 ($25x3) or ($90-$15) + the $3 tip to the Manager. That's a total of $78.00

What happened to the other $12.00?

They split $12 between them ($4X3).

AND WENT OUT FOR COFFEE. :-)

the problem all adds up. the room was only $75 so think about it this way. the manager gave each of them $5 back ($15 total). then with the $5 they each had, they each decided to give the manager a $1 from the money they were refunded totalling $3. they now each ave $4 left over. it all ads up to the original total of $90. you just gave the manager his tip twice.

You should be subtracting the $3 tip. Each man paid $26 which is $78 total INCLUDING the tip. $78 - $3 tip is $75 for the room.

the room cost 75$
the manager's tip 3$
the customers net rebate 12$ (3X4$)
75 + 3 + 12 = 90$

90 minus 75 equals 15 divided by 3 equals 5
15 minus 3 equals 12 divided by three equals 12
You are confused!

75+3 equals 78
you added 78 plus 3 equals 81 wrong
you multiplied 3 by 3 to get 9 wrong
