Find a good JavaScript tutorial and try programming some basic things in it. This way you don't bother downloading and installing compilers for C/C++, etc. All you need for JavaScript programming is a web browser and a text editor like Notepad (which comes with Windows under: Start > Programs > Accessories.) but prepare to be frustrated occasionally because computers are so much more literal than what our minds imagine.
Also, I suggest JavaScript for just a week or two of study to see if you like programming. But after that you may want to switch to Python since JavaScript can be confusing because you also need to know HTML and the concept of the DOM. If you hate JavaScript programming, still give Python a chance. Also, come up with simple projects that YOU WANT TO DO in either language even if it's just change the color of text or downloading a webpage and displaying parts of it.
For JavaScript, I suggest you use the Mozilla Firefox browser since it has a JavaScript Console and Debugger to give you a better idea of what's wrong with your program than Internet Explorer.

What everyone forgot to mention with the learn this and learn that is that you will need to get a compiler for the programing language that you want to learn. This compiler is loaded on your computer and will translate a computer program that you write to code that your machine can actually run.
Yes a course would be good as it will probably include the use of a compiler.

Decide first what you want the program to do and you'll have a much easier time writing a program. It's kind of hard to write a program when you haven't decided what you want the program to do. Web search "hello world" for some ideas -- "hello world" is the traditional 1st program in nearly every language.
