The man who framed my house did this. He said it was an old tradition, bringing good luck to the house. It was the first time I had seen this tradition practiced.

"Topping out" is the term used by ironworkers to indicate that the final piece of steel is being hoisted into place on a building, bridge, or other large structure.1 The project is not completed, but it has reached its maximum height. To commemorate this first milestone the final piece of iron is usually hoisted into place with a small evergreen tree (called a Christmas tree in the trade) and an American flag attached.

I'm just guessing but I get 2 pts., right or wrong, so who cares?
It's christmas?
So they don't have to cut the top off when the roof is done?
Because they don't want to haul a big tree up there?

The tree symbolizes growth. At the end of a project, often an American flag will fly from large jobs- to show that no one was killed on the job.

Yeah I've seen that across the nation in my travels. It's cool, but I don't know why they do it.
