It's compressed so it takes up less room.

Zipped Folders get their name from an old program called PKZip, (And later WinZip) which compressed several files into one file. Using basically the same compression algorhythms, Windows creates the same kind of files, but since the Zip format is part of the OS, it treats the Zip File as a folder since, like a folder, it holds several other files.

It is a compressed folder which can be easily send through mail or can be saved in a floppy.
