To start with, as you said - love comes first and then sex .
You can have sex without love but if in love , you see a person beyond a sex object and then you don't have sex with him/her but you make love .
A thin line but easy to identify , isn't it ?

Love is a feeling you have to be with or protect another person, to care for them, to be there when they need someone. Love is also what makes friendship possible; there cannot be friendship without love, and vise versa.
Sex is the joining of two organisms to create new life. Without the ability to reproduce, almost no organism living on Earth would exist, including humans. (unless you can live forever...)

Love is feeling emotions in a scary yet wonderful chaotic mix all at once, acting like an idiot and not caring. It's also a feeling of emptiness when the one you love is away from you. Sex is a physical representation of your love when words fail. It's wanting to be complete and to share what should be all of yourself with a person who is important to you.

You can have sex without love, and love without sex. One does not automatically go with the other one.

I think the best is the anticipation. It usually lasts longer too.
