It's more of a worry than fear. Being fearful implies not having any means of providing for retirement, and worrying implies not having sufficient. Young people starting work should do all they possibly can to provide for their retirement. The earlier they start, the easier it is, and the benefits are greater. A lot of people wake up too late to that fact. It is possible, with careful planning to retire at 55 - I did, and I have not regretted not spending my money frivolously during my working days.

yes, this is a partial answer. amongst many people there is the fear that when they retire -- there wont be enough money...in fact there is never enough money for most of us...except the very few! Money is not the end of the world...so the fear is at times..just a fear and not reality -- because of the fear..humans act...and when they act..at times..they act in their best interests...be it money or...other options. In conclusion...while there is fear of not having enough for retirement...many do plan..constructively. Hope it helps.

I would have to imagine so.

I plan to set up a 401k or an IRA so I can stash money away for retirement. I'm only 24 so I got some time but it is definately a concern of mine. If I work after I retire it is only because I want to because I am bored not because I have to. I mainly want to set up my own IRA or 401k because I have doubts social security will be around when I retire.

Not for me. I grew up knowing that my great aunt left me a college fund but found out when I got married that it is a large trust fund and that I get when I turn 25. It was a GREAT wedding present. And by the time my husband retires, I will still be working. So I will have a job and he can just stay at home. He is 19 years older than me. We have great plans for that time.

I think that many people fear about it. They want to enjoy the last few years of their lives with out having to worry for money. The problem is that people will worry about money no matter how much they have. We are never satisfied!

unfortunately we have become slaves to the economy, that's a fear before you become retired, the society enstills that as earlry as being able to spend money. and ppl paper chase until their deaths. Get rich or die trying is the mindset.

I'll bet it's a fear among average working stiffs if they'll have enough left over after payday and the weekend.

It is a fear and it's pretty realistic. Corporations have moved away from pention plans and put the resp on the workers themselves to invest in 401k's where most people have no clue about investments.....
