It isn't clear from the 'u' in the question whether the asker is asking the answerers to say what their individual sleep requirements are or whether it is referring to people in general.
This is one of the reasons why some people are saying what their personal needs are, while others are parroting the age-old 8 hours, 'average' of 7-9, my boyfriend only needs 4 etc.
Then there are the others who INSIST that one MUST have 8 hours. I'm surprised no-one mentioned that 1 hour's sleep before midnight is worth 2 hours after midnight!
A couple of answerers suggest that it is an individual thing and that the requirement for sleep gets less with age.
For several decades I functioned more than adequately on 5-6 hours in bed, probably 3-4 hours of them actually asleep. I could, if required go without sleep completely and not even notice, for at least 2 nights. Now I need 7 hours a night preferably starting before 2am.
This is, of course, irrelevant to everyone else in the world because sleep requirement, like every other human-related thing, really is down to individual difference. There are people who can get by on 1 hour and others who need 12 hours, so take your pick!
The average IS about 8 hours, which is why most people choose that number, whether it's relevant to them or not.
For those who mentioned the 'average' of 7-9 hours, by the way, 7-9 is a RANGE, not an AVERAGE.

4 - 5 hours max a night for the past 26 years (I'm 43). I don't use alarm clocks, I naturally just wake up after 4 - 5 hours. If I go to bed at 10 pm, I'm awake by 3 am. I usually go to sleep between 1 am and 2 am. and I am up between 5 am and 6 am. Everyone else in my family sleeps a good 8 hours. So I guess I'm either a freak of nature or just a freak. My response to those who tell me I need 8 hours of sleep each night, "I'll get all the sleep I need, when I'm dead".

To be honest, although the "experts" say 8 hours I think it depends from person to person.
I know people who get by on 4 hours. My BF can go to bed at 4am, get up at 8am and feel as fresh as a daisy. He normally won't sleep for very long - if he goes to bed at 2am he'll be waking up at 6am and not be able to get back to sleep. So I guess thats all his body needs. He's 23.
I need more than him - about 8 hours - more if I'm really really tired. And since I've been pregnant I can sleep all day quite happily.
Younger people often find they can get by with less sleep as can much older people who have retired. Working people in their 20s 30s and 40s often need the most, perhaps because they are most tired.
I think everyone has to go by what their body tells them. If you need more than you're getting it will be quick to tell you. Otherwise, just let your body clock direct you.
If people listened to their bodies more instead of relying on what "experts" say (which is generalised and not tailored to individuals) we'd all feel a lot better.

really i dont know may be 8 .. but i found this article and it might be interesting :
Although it’s a common belief that 8 hours of sleep is required for optimal health, a six-year study of more than one million adults ages 30 to 102 has shown that people who get only 6 to 7 hours a night have a lower death rate. Individuals who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 4 hours a night, were shown to have a significantly increased death rate compared to those who averaged 6 to 7 hours.

Most people need on average about 8 hours. Some people more, some less. I tend to need around 7... give me 8 hours of sleep and I feel like I've overslept.

Apparently only 8 hours a night. Any more and the brain won't function as well.
Also, you're supposed to have a half an hour nap during the afternoon. Apparently this goes back to our prehistoric ancestors, where they needed rest for hunting. I know that as I've gotten older I feel really drowsy and less productive around 3pm.
Hope this helps.

I can live on 4-5 hours, but not for too many days. I get baggy eyes and look terrible. Plus I really don't have the energy I like to have.
Ideally 6-7. Eight is really great.
