American Karateka suck, there are only a handful of decent martial arts schools in America most are just show offs, and as our friend form the USMC pointed out militiary systems are very effective, Marines are trained to kill.
Tradittional Martial Atrs are fine, you can take most people in a bar fight if you know how to use it and dont do anything flashy.
You dont have to go to a mixed Martial arts school per say, some are very effective but you can do what I did and just learn several arts and use the parts you like and find effective, not just the parts someone else feels work.
A bit off topic i know but i'd love a scrap, full contact only though.

Karate though a challenge is nothing compared to the modern day martial arts schools. Mixed Martial Arts. You want to play, than go to karate, you want to fight, to be challenged, mentally and physically, mixed martial arts is the way to go.
I did karate for 16 years, and was considered 3rd in north America in competition. Went to marine corps school of hand to hand combat, and got my *** handed to me. They all knew mixed martial arts. Know that i got my marine black belt, i realize how much better it is.
