He's in his mid-30's, I'm in late 30's. We've both been married before, have children (we won't be having any together), been together nearly a year and living together for awhile (bought the house together). I want to get married, he gives no indication of when this might happen.

I don't understand why you are 'waiting' on a proposal - this is 2006 - if you love him and want to get married, you can propose to him. You're both old hands at this so I wouldn't be so coy - you have a house together so that is a big committment in itself. Maybe he doesn't want to get married, sounds like you are settled enough as it is with house and kids so maybe he thinks since you've both had failed marriages it's best not to tempt fate, but if it's important to you, you need to let him know, or you could be waiting and waiting and before you know it, time has moved on even further.

Dear, at your age, you should be a bit smarter than this. And why oh why would you buy a house with some guy to whom you are not married? That more often than not leads to disaster. Why should he marry you? He has a house, someone to cook and clean, and a psuedo wife in you! If you are waiting for this bozo to propose, you will be old and gray and collecting Social Security before you realize it will NEVER happen. You are not 25 or even 35 anymore. I would begin looking for a way out.

When you are both ready there is not time limit. I met my husband 7 months after I was separated from my ex. And a year later we were married.

Wait.......

You'll be doing that for a long time I bet. If you have been married before why do you need that now? I've been with my boyfriend for 12 years and we are going to get married next year but only because he wants to. Doing for yourself and your kids should be more important that whether or not he wants to marry.

They say you should start talking about it by a year and engaged by 2. If you guys already bought a house together though then its time now. He might not want to go down that road again though.

1-2 years is IMO plenty of time to figure out whether you want to be with this person for good, or not. It would be useful to find out where he stands on the issue in general - whether marriage is in his plans at all.

Have you talked to him about it? I've been divorced and seeing my boyfriend for two years and we're not ready to make the next step to marriage. What is your hurry to get married??
