I'm trying to start listening to more bands just to see what's out there and fill up my ipod. I'm a pretty open guy and I think I have really good taste (of course I think that.) So right now these are my favorite bands.
Favorites:
Muse
A Perfect Circle
Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts
And The Mars Volta,
Others: Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Coldplay, DragonForce, Eric Clapton, Fuel, Guns N' Roses, Keane, The Killers, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, The Misfits, Modest Mouse, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Queen, Ratatat, Ray Charles, Rush, Slipknot, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Tool, U2, Velvet Revolver, Weezer
I like classical music and jazz a lot too. I like GOOD rap. Tupac, Kanye, you know, substance rap.
I pretty much only hate mainstream music that sucks.
Green Day, 50 Cent, Nirvana, "crunk music" country, so if you have similar taste to me could you give some recommendations? Friends told me interpol and rage against the machine are good.

RHCP is so overrated. They have liek 3 good songs, and about 200 that sound like those three. I don't really care how talented Flea is... I mean, I know I listed dragonforce as a favorite but i shouldn't have. I don't care as much about theatrics ad technique. I'm all about good melodies. RHCP has Cabron, By The Way, and Road Trippin'. Honestly I find the rest of their songs off of Stadium Arcadium, Californiacation, By The Way and their greatest hits albums to be intolerable. Also the ramones suck. and most screamo and metal bands have like 2 good songs. I wish there were more bands like Muse...best band ever I have everyone of there albums downloaded and I also have abuot 45 B sides, and there's only one song out of all of those that I don't like and I'd still consider that one song better than all RHCP. Also i may be from New Jersey, but I hate springsteen and bon jovi UGGHHHHHHH I found interpol too boring btw, the vocals get annoying. keane's vocals pwn. k im ranting now.

Interpol not really, RATM is good, yeah.
Some band I'd add would be Motörhead, Rise Against, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Carlos Santana, Steve Miller (Band), RHCPs, Dire Straits, Soundgarden and Jimmy Buffett.

If you haven't heared A Love Supreme by John Coltrane then you should just stop messing around and get it. And I know you haven't heard it, because if you did you wouldn't have to ask this question, you's be listening to jazz, real jazz.
Anyway, here's more real jazz ARTISTS:
Wayne Shorter
(Rahsaan) Roland Kirk-Jimi Hendrix's idol.
Joe Henderson
Charles Mingus
Jazz has the truest musicians, these are just some.
The best thing you can do for yourself is go to the Village Vanguard (NY) and hear it live.
PS-Just so you have a reference point for my suggestion, here's some of my favorites you probably know:
Pink Floyd-Animals
Eric Clapton-All his blues songs
Muddy Waters-I'm Ready
Grateful Dead-1973-74 and1989-1991 especially.
Tom Waits-Blue Valentine.
Stones-Let It Bleed.

First of all you got some good music like U2, Pearl Jam, Coldpaly, Keane, Killers, stuff like that. you need the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS!!!!!!!! and John Frusciante, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, INXS (especially the original stuff with Michael Hutchence) the Boomtown Rats (really good punk band from the late 70s with Bob Geldof as the singer) Virgin Prunes, Talking Heads, Jane's Addiction, Panic Channel, Interpol, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Audioslave, Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Rock Kills Kid

If you like the White Stripes, you will like The Black Keys. Same setup as the White Stripes(guitar and drums), but have more of a grungier, delta-esque blues sound. I would also recommend anything Ben Folds does(either Ben Folds Five or Ben Folds solo). If you like the harder sounding stuff, the group Wolfmother(sp?) would be a great recommendation. Also go back and listen to older groups like Yes, Styx, Moody Blues, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Roxy Music, or performers like David Bowie and Brian Eno.

Red hot chili peppers:
best band because:
think about it: they managed to stay in business for half thier lives (since early 80's) and every album gets better and better. they have gotten raving reviews on stadium arcadium, which is thier latest album. they always improve upon themseves and i dont think there is one person out there who hasnt heard the song under the bridge or scar tissue that has a radio. the lyricist/singer anthony kiedis influences the lyrics based on his life experiences and the experiences of the rest of the members. the songs are full of meaning, not like other songs that have the chorus repeat 20 times and thats about it. not only that the bassist and one of the founding members, flea, has very famous bass riffs and can play the trumpet too in some of the peppers's songs. each band member influences thier struggles and happiness and anger and sadness in each instrument they use, whether its the drums or their voice or their mind. every time i listen i feel so much emotion being given to me like they really care about thier music. i feel very passionate about them. they are also very productive: they are releasing 7 singles off stadium arcadium, and have already released dani california and tell me baby and soon to come is snow. each song has a different stroy and many allusions to the current world and its problems. its not a sociopolitical band. but a band that knows reality the harshness of life and is able to masterfully portray it in their music. rock on, peppers, rock on!

I like a wide variety of music as well. Check out Cowboy Junkies(kinda bluesy), Tori Amos(awesome voice, writes her own songs and plays the piano), Hole(angry white female music), & Poe(in a class of it's own, hard to describe). And friends are right about Rage against the machine, very good. I haven't heard of interpol but may have to check them out!

Gavin Degraw is VERY good... very soulful, if you are more in the mood for some hard rock then try Drain STH (Swedish female band), Fiona Apple seems also to be in your genre of music (Tidal CD), John Mayer, Nickelback - that should keep you busy for a little while.
