If you are in the UK then yes it is criminal damage,
although you have not effected the working function of the streetlight, by removing the door from its base has therefore inflicted a damage upon as it forms a constituent part of the streetlight mechanism (its purpose obviously to allow access for repairs and to stop electrical parts being overexposed to the elements) There is specific case law on something not too dissimilar where the magistrates agreed that by removing part of a machine even if it did not stop it from operating was criminal damage.
You may also be interested to know that around 10 years ago a street artist was successfully prosecuted under the same legislation even though he was using water soluble (would wash away in the rain) chalk for drawing on the pavement with!
Hope this helps

WHY would you want to do that?
It most certainly could be termed as criminal damage - it would be enough for you to be arrested on suspicion of - whether a charge would be forthcoming or how you would get on in court is another matter.
Although you may not be damaging it by actually removing the door, damage could be caused within by the removal of the door. Otherwise why would they have a door on it if not to protect something? You could put others at risk of some form of electric shock - could possibly even cause death or serious injury - I don't know much about street lights - but again, WHY?

The best way to hack streetlights is to climb to the top, and use and all metal hack saw to cut through the wires. make sure the handles is not insulated.

Yes it is illegal as the lamp post belongs to the local council so it would be classed as vandalism but I have done it and it is not very interesting and not worth the bother

Not just illegal, but profoundly stupid. A child could easily electrocute themselves if the door was left removed.

Personally, I would arrest you on suspicion of theft, and/or criminal damage.
The fact you have not damaged it, or had a chance to steal it, is neither here nor there.
Interfering with street furniture is an offence anyway.

Interfering with street furniture, you'd have to convince the authorities you weren't trying to damage it and would probably receive a stern warning not to do it again. Ever.

Not sure if it's illegal but it's dangerous. Don't tamper with things you know nothing about.
