Some one asked a very good question to what purpose does the fence serve? if it is to keep your dogs on a run or in an enclosure chain link is reasonable and has a long life .Privacy fence if you have the money go for the vinyl as it requires no maintenance and can be installed by just a couple of people as the weight is reasonable but never having to paint or replace is a really nice feature Wood is much cheaper but requires deep post digging and a lot of maintenance as they rot also if you stain it you will be redoing it every year as the wood sucks up the oils in the stain and they fade.Shadow box are labor intense ,ship lapped looks horrid after a couple of years and board on board you might as well go for the vinyl as the cast is prohibitive.

It depends mostly on the purpose of the fence. I have wood, chain link (with vinyl privacy slats) and vinyl, and I am satisfied with all of them for their particular purposes. I don't have iron, but I have seen some very attractive iron fences that limit access while keeping the visual boundaries open (such as around pools, etc.)
Wood looks good for some years, but ultimately it rots away. I have had wood fences last 20 or 25 years, if the posts were sunk in concrete and I kept up the maintenance.
I have chain link around my poultry enclosures, where I line it with the smaller poultry wire. After sad experience with dogs breaking through poultry wire alone, I have had no problems with protecting my chickens, ducks, and geese with a dual layer of chain link and poultry wire. I also have chain link, with vinyl privacy staves that match the color of my house, around the part of my yard that is devoted to my dogs. It's virtually indestructible, looks decent, and keeps my dogs where they belong.
I have a 3-foot vinyl picket fence in front of my house, and it is very attractive and requires no maintenance. It was relatively expensive, but it never needs painting, and nothing can rot, so I think it was a good investment.
So the big question is what purpose your fence will serve.....

well my husband does fences and i can tell you that wood sucks!it warps and discolors and doesnt last long!vinyl fences are pretty to look at but they can break if someone falls agaist it and not very durable!chainlink is good, but not very private!iron will last forever!but it wont keep kids in,but does a good job at keeping larger animals in !and they look great!

Depends on where you live and what you want the fence to do. Keep in mind that if you live in a neighborhood with restrictions/covenants that oftentimes chain link fencing is not allowed.

What are you trying to keep in/out? if it's just for privacy, go for wood.
