I always try and make some good snacks to keep myself feed and entertained with out stoping at gas stations to eat really horrid food. Too bad you are leaving tonight because personally I think a good mix cd is fun but maybe you can pick up some books on tape. I would also bring some kind of spray sanitizer because I did a road trip in the US once and the toilets were so dirty I couldn't believe it and I have been to some weird parts of the world. Also bring lots of bottled water cause it saves money and keeps you hydrated.

An MP3 player with a ton of tunes is great or XM/Sirius Satellite Radio. Directions would help too... Sunglasses for when you're looking into the sun, those are really useful sometimes. And snacks and stuff so you don't have to pay a whole lot at rest stops although you'll have to stop for the bathroom breaks.

DON'T take a map. Just hit the road, head west, and trust that you'll get there. Keep your eyes open for any fun places to stop on the way and you'll have an amazing trip.
Do take a roll of paper towels. You'll be surprised by how much you need them; the road is a dirty place my friend.

Assuming you have all the basic necessities I would just make sure you take a hunting style knife (you never know), flashlight, extra batteries, music and ensure your spare tire is properly inflated.
If you have one, definitely have a video camera and regular camera handy to capture the different scenes across the US.
Good luck!

Make sure you have a good supply of your favorite music, and tissue.
Make sure you have cash (a small amount) on hand and any medication you need up front with you.
Make sure you have a flashlight with fresh batteries. Also a roadside assistance kit, with your insurance number at hand.
Have fun and watch out for those african honey bees.

Gees, if you break down, tunes and snacks wont do you any good. Prepare for emergencies on the road.

a map is good. A pillow too. Something to get your imagination going or put you to sleep. I knit when I have to go to visit my mother.
