It has nothing to do with the nationality of the players involved or the supposed ego of the United States. The term "World Series" is derived from the original "World's Championship Series", coined in the 1880s when professional baseball existed almost entirely within the U.S., and proclaiming things as "World" was in fashion. The term was adopted again for the 1903 World Series and tradition has carried it forward.
As a side note, five of the seven pitchers of record in the 2005 World Series were not from the United States, so while most of the teams are located in the the U.S., it is not just Americans who take part.

I am so tired of people who keep asking the same question. "Why is it called the World Series?" Why don't you have a life?
The world series was created when the only country who played baseball professionally was the U.S. There was also apparently this newspaper called "The World" that funded it, so that might have also influenced the name. Nowadays, more countries play baseball professionally. The reason that they didn't change the name was that it was so popular when it was known as the World Series and it brought so much money, why should the name change because more countries play? Now, it's not just Americans who play the world series. Have you ever heard of the TORONTO(city in canada!) Blue Jays? Oh, and if you really want a baseball series that features the whole world, you should look up the World Baseball Classic and the Olympics.

There is only one real sport that has a World Series-Baseball- and honestly, the talent ranges from all over the world. Yes the clubs are based in the US and Canada but the players come from the US, Canada, Mexico, Domincan Republic, Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Curacao, Russia, Austrailia, Japan, Taiwan, North and South Korea, China, Saipan, Vietnam, Thailand and the Pacific Islands. Even though the base is in America, there is no team that is entirely American. We get the best talent in the world. Maybe you ( and I think youre European b/c usually they always question American Sports) should give Baseball a chance. Its a sport and if you like sports you will like baseball. I watch all sports and try to give every sport an opportunity. I am a big soccer fan as well and yesterday I watched a great match between Chelsea and Man City. Give American Sports a chance.

Because it is an American game. We started the league well before any other country was even capable of mass producing wooden bats. It has been called that for over a hundred years. It is not just Americans that take part. MLB players come from around the world to play in the biggest and best league in the world. It is not even true that they are only American teams. The toronto Blue Jays and until recently the Montreal Expos are/were Canadian.

In most cases, they are named so because of international viewers watching the game. It doesn't neccessarily mean the game is played elsewhere. While MLB for example is indeed America's Game, it has spread to other countries, most notably Japan. However, the World Series is mostly done by American players for a number of factors, including the trouble of international teams having to travel to America to compete and vice versa, which prevents it from being a "true" World Series.
NBA, on the other hand, features a different story. While the NBA Championships are only done in America, it is viewed around the globe at a large scale. Because of this, it is no surprise the title for 'champion of the world' would be given in this case.
If you're looking for a game that has the proper definition of 'World Series', aside from the Olympics, there is no other sport than Soccer.

We call our sports teams the World champs because we take the best of the best from all over the world. Look at baseball, whites are now the minority, in fact the level of african american players is lower than it has ever been since the 70's. We have more south american's, asians in this game than the history of the game. Footbal: Why do you think you never hear of someone top flight leaving their NFL team for the Canadian, or European leagues because the NFL is the premeire league. Basketball: Same old song and dance people work hard and do everything they can to make it to the NBA, because it has the most money, most talent, and competition. Cycling: We haven't lost a Tour de France in 8 years 'nough said (Floyd Landis did it all on his own). Motocross: We have not lost the Motocross Des Nations(biggest race all over the world) in 14 years. Nascar: Who else is faster in a stock car outside of the states. These individuals and teams in America deserve every bit of respect they get, they are the best at what they do in the world.

Its not all their big games it is only baseball that their is a world series in. The reason it is called the world series is because the players come from all over the world different cultures and countrys there for many parts of the world are actually represented in a major legue baseball team. Its not just people from the U.S. playing in the majors. After all America after all is built on other nationalitys and cultures.

Ego? Haha! That's rich.
Has anyone ever studied the make-up of the USA'a world class teams? At least in the Big Four pro sports?
Mexicans, Norweigians, Germans, Africans (all parts), Asians (all parts), Russians, Cubans, Canadians... every game is a world series of sorts.
Also, only one pro sport calls their championship game the World Series, Major League Baseball.
Why do the majority of you people think Americans are egotists? Just because we live in the best counrty ever in the history of the earth doesn't mean we deserve all this animosity. I think the rest of the world has penis envy.

Because at the time, American was the only place baseball was played so it was called the World Series. Now I think we're pretty sure that there is some good competition out there in the worldwide scale for baseball.

Because players from all parts of the world participate in our sports? And to my knowledge the only sports league that uses the word "World" in their championship game/series is the MLB which has players from every single continent in the world.
Probably the most pathetic attempt at bashing America I've seen in a long long time.
