In america history, the italians and all of them slowly began being accepted as "white". Is the same happening to hispanics/latins?

There was a wiki article about it but it got deleted or something.

The US Census Bureau answered your question: How Should Hispanics or Latinos Answer the Race Question?

People of Hispanic origin may be of any race and should answer the question on race by marking one or more race categories shown on the questionnaire, including White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Some Other Race. Hispanics are asked to indicate their origin in the question on Hispanic origin, not in the question on race, because in the federal statistical system ethnic origin is considered to be a separate concept from race.

In English, if you are Hispanic or Latino, you can say you are of any race you want but ethnicity-wise, Hispanic or Latino is its own category. So it is doubtful that Hispanics/Latinos will be lumped into the category of being "white."

I agree with the first response. But no matter what you will have some groups who exclude other groups..color is just an easy one to pick out.... just go to any playground and you will see certain kids will disassociate themselves from others based on trivial things like hair color or tennis shoes... somepeople feel the need to segregate in order to feel superior or for a sense of belonging.

it sucks....I hope as humans we evolve past this... wouldn't it be nice if we all eventually became the same color?

oohhh....what then will we have to bicker about?

oohhh Raevens'Honey such hostility....do you fear us beaners?

I would say they are pretty much accepted as "white". Many still retain their cultural heritage, but other hispanic families speak no Spanish, eat no ethnic food, and celebrate no ethnic holidays, which I suppose makes them accepted as "white". Even if they aren't, I'd say the emphasis on their ethnicity is culturally diminished.

I don't think hispanics are being viewed as whites, I've never even heard that before you mentioned it. Besides, most of the hispanics I know are proud of their heritage and don't want to be white.

Many hispanic are part white, and also look very white. A mexican might be albe to pass as a spaniard, for example. Or vice versa like Antonio Banderas. I am half white and half hispanic, I look very white. Most of my friends are white, and I date white girls. So, yes. =)

This is all so messed up! I am Latina, but my family is of Spanish descent. My skin is white and I look white, but still I'm considered Hispanic. It doesn't bother me, except when there are people who confuse skin color and descent with ethnicity. And it seems like many people hasn't studied their history books: at this age, there are no "pure races".

being hispanic is not a race it is an ethniticy. There are white and black hispanics. There are only 3 races which are caucasion, black, and mongoloid officially. You can learn about this in any socialogy class.
