It's important because it pays respect to the millions that died fighting for our rights. When our ancestors came over here they was robbed of everything, there language,nationality,religion,... and there way of life to be replaced with that of slaves. Millions were kill just trying to keep this, while millions more died just in slave ships. Just think what it was like being chained up force to walk hundreds of miles to the coast, stripped naked, put on a ship pack with a bunch of sick people, dark, and flowing with all kinds of dieases for three months. After that they were separated from there families, then sold as slaves. Next they were work from sun up to well after sun down for the slightest mistake 40 lashes. With all of this they where still singing and was joyest people so what better way to pay respect than to remember and celebrate all that they did. Most whites don't understand taking away black history will make their stuggles go in vain.

Does it really bother you??? The shortest month of the year is called black history month. Its not like anyone goes out of their way to do anything for black history month anyway. You may see a few extra commercials here and there, but thats about it. Reality is... yes we are all human. So, in that respect we are the same. Blah, blah, blah. But besides that... we are different. We are very different. We have different experiences, a lot of different beliefs, I could go on and on. And, the fact that we are different is OKAY. There is nothing wrong with being different. So, lets embrace the differences and use it as a way to learn from each other... not as a way to segregate each other.

Im just sick of them thinking they are the only group ever opressed. Get your **** together as a race, join the evolutionary process and start helping themselves and maybe we wouldn't. Think about it Jews have been oppressed for THOUSANDS of years and still manage to prosper. Why do they feel the need to keep reminding me they are black, im not blind. They just want black history month, black entertainment television and black miss America, I say we seperate everything and let them run their side into the ground instead of dragging down everyone elses.

I was in an alternative living situation once and I took the day off for St. Patrick's Day. They questioned me about it and I asked them why they rolled the red carpet out for black history month and could not even prepare a special Irish dinner for those of us who are Irish. I was in a community that was basically Norwegian and Swedish. In all the time I was there I never knew them to have lute fish and lefsa either. Of all of us there it was probably only 5% black. Maybe 10% American Indian. I am Irish and live in a town that is 99.999% Irish, but when asked my nationality I don't say Irish American. If we grew up here then we are Americans. If you ask a black they say African American, they place the African first, if it is that important to them then go back there. If you ask an American Indian his nationality they will say American Indian, placing America first. One of the first girls that I fell in love with as a teen was a Mexican girl who lived in our town. She spoke English as good as we did and went to the Catholic school. I thought I was really in love with her, but my dad said he would castrate me before he had a Mexican grandkid. Then he gets serious and says they all get fat as they age. Anyway to me she was know different than I was, I born in America the same as her and to this day I still think of her. To me there was know difference in us other than our sex. In fact my oldest daughter even dated her sister son, I even encouraged that. He was a hard working boy ever since he was a young teen and had a very positive outlook on life.

To an extent, we need black history month as a reminder that black Americans spent the first 100 years in slavery.
We would not want to enslave or oppress any other minority in America.
At some point, an Hispanic awareness week or month is justified even though Hispanics were not enslaved like black Americans were.

We are the same, two thumbs up. I think we should have an Every Body's month. Where people all come together and try to understand each other. Where every human being comes together no matter what race, sexuality gender. We all need to do our parts and let love come to us all.

Yes we still need it because we are not the same each one of us is different, each culture is different, each family is different, each nation is different.we are all different and we do need certain days to remember different cultures because there are people who we forget about or who are important, without those certain days we wouldn't remember any different cultures we WOULDN'T remember ANYTHING.If we still need our holidays like fourth of July, memorial day,st. Patrick's day and such then we still need black history month
