actually i was in a long term relationship that fell apart because of this, when the whole time i had a plan to propose on her b-day but she kept bugging me about. i wanted it to be a surprise and something i wanted to do not feel pressured into it

Men have to realize that women have a timer in their heads that tells them, "We've dated long enough. He should ask me to marry him." The timer can be 2 months to 5 years. We should expect the question after about 5 months and decide if it's time. If we are serious about getting married, we should let our intentions be known.
