Actually, President George H. W. Bush and his military advisors, including General Colin Powell, decided to let Saddam remain in power, with about half of his original army personnel and some of his artillery and armor which had not been destroyed. This was done because Saddam was a secular leader, not a religious fanatic like Iran's leader at that time. It was hoped that Saddam would buffer the middle east against Iran. Saddam's invasion of Kuwait, to add Kuwait's wealth and oil to his own, had already been defeated.

Clinton actually tried to do something about the terrorist problem, but congress voted against him and went with Operation Ignore, which was still in effect when Bush Jr. Took office.

And Bush Sr. realized that taking out Saddam could have upset the already tedious balance the Middle East has. Kurds + Shiites + Sunnis are there itching for a civil war, and a bunch of middle eastern countries are dying to get more oil. Not only that, but with the recent rise of china, and their actions when we refused to give up an oil company, reflect that they too (plus russia), would waltz in there for cheap oil .

And might I also suggest, because of the Geneva Convention also restricts what we can do towards the situtation. Namely, drop like a pile of bricks.

We are there now and no matter who or how , that's water under the bridge and we can't go back to hash all that . What matters now , is who is in charge of this invasion today . And what are they going to do about it . Are they just going to let it drag on and on forever and meanwhile we are losing more and more soldiers . When will it become to many , being killed . This is the Republicans war , I hope they know what to do to end it . Although I have my doubts . They were gungho to get into it but no idea how to get out , so lets blame something on the Dem's , to take the blame off us .

Don't you realize that blaming the President for everything is the thing to do?

So I came here and asked why I Farted and 80% of the people who Answered Blamed President Bush, before my question got deleted............

You can put up as many Facts as you want but people are still going to Blame Bush for EVERYTHING because they are Either Ignorant or just too Young to Know Better.........

you got that right....it seemed we went in with kid gloves. plus americans are so impatient they think it should take days to overcome decades of oppression and extremism. they also think democracy will not change anything but look at iraq now they still have violence, heck they have lived with that for generations but now they are reaching out to the outside world, they are voting, women are voting. they are going to school and rebuilding their world and our military is helping them do all of this. yeah, war is hell as they say but sometimes you go to go through hell to get to heaven

"We had to destroy the village in order to save it."

Let's hear it for General Westmoreland, folks!

Seriously, though. Ever hear the expression leave it better than you found it? Seems like it was a successful approach to World War II.
