When I'm in America it is a toast when drinking with friends, when I'm overseas it means thank you or have a great day... I generally think of it as something nice to say so I'll interchange it with good bye when I'm leaving somewhere or a conversation...

Usually it's a more light hearted way of saying
"Thanks pal " ....Thankyou ..etc In England I've mostly seen it done with a thumbs up as it's being said ....yeah ...saying thankyou without the seriousness of a formal thank you :-)

It is a salutation you use when drinking with someone. You are offering them good health and all the best, etc, etc.

it means to me, "DEATH, death to you and your family. I HATE YOU."

So when I'm in a pub and someone says it to me I just dump the beer on their heads and leave. I just don't know why people insist on cursing me.
