Roaming is a general term in wireless telecommunications that refers to the extending of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered. However one must keep in mind that Roaming is only for those who are too cheap to buy a real cellphone with a good plan. Roaming occurs when a subscriber of one wireless service provider uses the facilities of another wireless service provider. This second provider has no direct pre-existing financial or service agreement with this subscriber to send or receive information.

yeah usually roaming is a bad thing. It means you're outside your provider's coverage area but (hopefully) you have a signal to another tower that you can use, but it'll cost you a lot of money extra per minute. Some companies may have plans that include roaming but most of the time calling a roaming area equals money.

Example of roaming:

You are a verizon customer and go somewhere where verizon does not have towers... you will prob have service cuz your signal is picked up by another companies tower. Usually that means that verizon has a contract with that company (ie cingular) that says they will provide verizon wireless customers service in their area...

Not always a bad thing, my plan has free roaming only costs more to recieve and send text in extended network (which is another term for roaming and only happened once when I visited in a very small town in Iowa).

Depends on your plan more so than the company.

It means you were not using your network. Your phone grabbed the signal of another provider, and put your call through. In most cases you can avoid this by doing settings in your phone.

For example, under Network on most Sprint phones, you can set it to PCS only.

This is good for your wallet, but can be really bad for you if you're in an emergency situation.
