Nope. There's "a lot" meaning a great quantity or a bunch. And there's "allot" meaning to give out a portion of something, usually money. But there's no "alot". However, it might as well be added to the dictionary, so many people use it that way.

Actually, a lot is two words. I remember it well, the teacher always corrected me on this in my essays and I will never forget it. It is two words meaning many.

No, needs a space after "a" . Some dictionaries have it in them, as slang words.

I went to collage and used it all the time. Finally I noticed that spell check always flagged it. So it's not a word.
I was crushed.

Depends what you mean but as there are two possible uses 'alot' is wrong for both' If you mean 'plenty' then that would be 'a lot' but if you mean to divide and distribute portions that would be 'allot'.

'alot' is not a single word.
But it is used in writing as in speech.
Eg: Thanxalot, thanks alot, alot of wishes, alot of guests, alot of flowers, with alota love & affection,
Writing following the speech pattern. Nobody speaks a language word by word unless he is giving a dictation of words or conducting a spellingbee!

No it's not. However, in my Handy American Dictionary, it is in there, but it does state that it is an error.

nope, altho it is often misspelled, it is actually 2 words, "a lot".
i had a perfect term paper in college and my prof failed it for one reason and one reason only, and that was because i wrote "alot" instead of "a lot".
