Protection from aggression of others, establishing a system of property rights, adjudicating disputes, providing and maintaining certain public services and utilities, providing for the helpless and very disadvantaged.

I like the social contract theory. It's not a perfect theory but it's a good, basic, easy to understand theory of government, that explains a lot. I'll get a reference in a minute.

Case in point. Look at Somalia. Although too much government can hamper things, the lack of it allows for the "strong" or "rich" to abuse the little guy.
The government includes legislative, judicial, and executive offices. Each serves as somewhat of a checks and balances against the other. The important thing is to elect the "right" officials--that is one that serves your best interests.

To handle issues that effect the entire community (local, state, or nation) that can not be handled by individuals or the private sector. For example: national defense, infrastructure (roads, water, electricity, etc.), law enforcement, single currency, etc. These issues benefit everyone in the community, but are too large or compex to be handled by individuals or the private sector.

I think roads are probably the best example. While the private sector is capable of building roads, there must be a single central authority to control where the roads are built. Otherwise, there would be complete chaos and would result in harm to the community, rather than benefit.

To protect us, and to keeps us organized and respecting traditional values. The role of government is to keep the liberals in check, so they don't ruin the country with their radical ideas.

We need to respect the way things are done, and to to change our lifestyles just because a few liberal radicals think that they're being mistreated. If they would only get in the mainstream where they belong, everything would be fine.

The government is there to protect us and to ensure we keep to the mainstream.

So we wouldn't have anarchy, plain and simple. But, by the way our government is being run... who or what is there to protect us from the government and the lousy, lying, cheating, parasitic politicians?

Because there would be anarchy without government.
