The amount may be different for a 2300cc, a 3000cc and a 4000cc engine. Get your engine size and then head to the public library and check their manuals for the correct amount for your engine.

if it's Ford Ranger you're talking about then it's probably 4 and a half quarts and maybe 5 assuming you put a new filter on there. Start with 4 and a half plus the new filter, then start up the Ranger and let it run for 30 seconds. With the Ranger in Park and Emergency brake on, get out and check under the truck for any possible leaks. If none, then shut off the engine and wait 1 minute - then check the oil level on the dipstick and add another 1/2 quart if needed.

I have an '02 Ranger with a 2300cc. It takes just over 4 when you change the oil filter.

...well preferably NONE if it had an oil FILL...(it should have already been FILLED with 5quarts.)
