I define best as a hybrid of skills. I like to play characters that have a mixture of melee, magic, and healing skills OR the ability to get good items that grant the above. I have just purchased both Diablo 2 and the expansion pack. Yeah I know I'm 4 years behind but I've been a MMORPG finatic for the last few years.

I usually like playing with an Act II spear mercenary, as they give me additional auras. Although a high-level Act I Rogue merc with a good bow (elementals) can be useful at getting all those annoying flayers and fallen that bunch up and run away...

Though if you're playing as a Sorceress you may want an Act V barbarian merc for balance.

For a hybrid of skills, the Palladin is a good easy choice for running around beating on things, magical skills (holy bolt, for example), and those neat auras for yourself (holy freeze/fire) or the party.

My next choice would be a Druid. Although you cannot cast any of the elemental skill spells while transformed as a wolf/bear, though... I usually cast a spell (like cyclone armor) and then convert to the animal form. A spirit choice is very helpful to have around for your party, at all times. Even not transformed and just a spellcaster, you're still pretty strong to beat on things.

Next choice would be a Necromancer. You could go the poison/bone route, and beat up on things. Or you could go for more of a zookeeper and have a bunch of skeletons and revives and cast away with your curses while you sit back and watch. many choices here.

The barbarian does have some party shouts, and the amazon does have a few party aids like inner sight, but mostly they're straight melee.

The Sorc is pretty powerful in her spells, but cannot carry much in stronger equipment so cannot do much/any melee. I hear that she's very good at magic find runs, though.

I've never played the Assassin - I just didn't like the looks of any of her builds.

Well, that's a really good game, even if it is old. I'm seriously considering starting up with it again.

I found Necromancers and Paladins the best characters to play. Based on what you said you like characters to have, I'd say go with the Paladin. They're very fairly balanced between melee and magic (and if you're playing in a group, having a supportive Paladin with healing magic is a MUST in a large group). Higher level Paladins have some really powerful holy spells, but they can also get really physically strong. In a group setting, they provide a lot of support and help to other players, even if it doesn't look like they're doing a lot, they generally are, by lowering the defence of monsters, or healing other characters just by standing close to them. Unlike a Sorceress, if your character gets pushed into the corner, a Paladin can fight back with a sword or axe. With a Sorceress, your best bet is to run.

However, Paladins don't do so well in Player VS Player combat, unless the player is a veteran. Mostly because if you focus on both a bit of melee and a bit of magic, they're not strong enough in either to take on a character that's purely melee or purely magic based. They're also kinda open-ended, so if you don't have a goal as to what your Paladin is going to be like, you can wind up with a character that can do lots of different things, but none of them well. It's easy to put points towards stats you'll never really need.

Necromancers are cool because you can raise an army and not do any fighting at all. Just follow behind them and they'll protect you (mostly).

Items are dropped randomly.

Good luck and have fun!

OMG man, I'm trapped in MMORPG land too lately with Final Fantasy 11.

In D2 I liked the necromancer best because of the minimal melee ability, and the cool magic. You have to admit, a character that can create their own army of golems and undead is kind of sweet. I used to love my undead posse.

Only if you don't have an expansion character. When the D2 expansion create a character they can make a expansion or non expansion character by checking a box under the name.
