Because we make the mistake of thinking the few represent the many. Because what we know of Islam is limited more or less to what extremists do, and because our government and pop culture represent America to Muslims, we have a distorted view of each other. If we all had to live with each other, we'd find the differences are greatly outnumbered by the similarities. If our government did as much to educate us about Islam as they do terrifying us with terror alerts, we'd be better off (although the government would quickly lose whatever support they have left for the so-called war.)
