It's caused by you're heart. What happens is, when ure body is at rest ure heart rate drops to about 50 beats a minute. It's only supplying enough blood to keep ure body functioning. You're heart will sometimes produce an extra beat and it's the sudden extra beat of ure heart that causes a rush of blood to ure muscles which in turn causes ure body to suddenly jolt.. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Muscles are driven into action by electrical impulses generated by the brain and transmitted through the nervous system. Every now and then there is a build up of electricity and it is subsequently released in an uncontrollable manner causing spasms. You must have seen a politician speak. Seriously this happens.

When you're asleep, your brain shuts off the nerve connections to your muscles, so that you don't act out your dreams. As you're falling asleep, sometimes there's an extra nerve impulse as the brain is shutting down the connection. That makes your muscles twitch.

When you are asleep or near asleep your body will do a full systems check just to make sure you are healthy, it normal enough but I dint suppose you were worried about it anyway (?)

wekk it happens to me all the time and it always happend when i am going to sleep. I always have like a little dream that im riding my bike and i am falling on to a poll then i jolt and i wake up. but srry i dont know what it is.......

a scientific theory recently produced said that these spasm relate back to when were apes and slept in trees.they help by keeping us from falling out ,that's why its called nodding off to sleep ,an inbuilt survival instinct.

Do you mean like if you fall off a cliff in your sleep??
I hate that. I think its your body spasming all your muscles for some weird reason, i think it happens if you are particually tired.

It's a sleep spasm , like when you are between being awake and asleep-- near on deep sleep.

It has something to do with entering the first cycle of your sleep. Scientists can't fully explain it yet though!

Because you are still breathing and therefore filling your lungs with air. (which causes the rising and falling of your chest)
