You (the working class) ARE doomed unless you transform yourselves into as smart and as willing workers as anyone else in the world. Isolationism doesn't work in this global age.

And forget about your "incredible greed of corporations". That's horsehockey. Corporations have to survive the same as you do and most of them are subject to similar global pressures. Workers that are unwilling to do, not only "a fair day's work for a fair day's pay", but to excel at their jobs, are nothing but candidates for Communism, and the world has found that Communism doesn't work.

In the short run yes. Without technological innovation, no country enjoys a competitive advantage over others forever. Why? Because Adam Smith's invisible hand will transfer existing technologies to all nations until global wages are level. Only by innovating (and protecting against infringement) can you stay ahead of the pack.

Global communication and decreased shipping costs (thanks to those huge container ships) have sped up the rate of leveling.

Globalization = lower prices for american citizens. It will also require american citizens to get higher education to be able to compete for higher wages and jobs. It would be not economically feasible for many companies in the US who outsource there jobs to have plants in the US where they have to pay higher wages and follow tons of codes and laws.
