If it's just a Turntable you will need an Amplifier to plug it into, once
you have it plugged in or hooked up to an amplifier brush your finger across the needle if it makes noise it should be okay to play the records.

Yes, all you do is plug it in, make sure the speed is on 33 for regular sized record. 45 if you are playing the small records. 78 is for the older bigger records. As far as the needle goes, rub your finger across it and you should hear a loud scratchy sound, then you know it is working. This of course also means that you must plug the speakers into the back of it. There should be two holes for these plugs. IF you still are not sure , use an old record that your Dad doesn't care for and test the player first. Place the record on top, then move the metal arm to the very begining of the record, it will begin to play. Hope this helped good luck. Vinyal was so cool back in the day. I loved collecting albums. I loved the album art and all the cool stuff artist would put inside. Like stories, or stickers or posters, Even tickets! AAAAAHHHHHHH- those were the days!!! GOOD LUCK!

Does it have speakers built in or do they have to be added on. If it doesn't have the speaker built in you are out of luck until you can find a set of speakers to go with it. You may also need an amplifier. The only way you can tell if the needle is good is to play a record and see how it sounds. If the needle is bad and the record is not damaged then the sound will be terrible, lots of hisses and pops.
