It's an Oreck XL Professional with a metal filter that never needs replacing. I bought the cleaning solution they sell, but I'm wondering if there is something else I can use? I need something that is going to take the caked on junk (mostly from cigarette smoke I think) off of the metal. Just in case anyone else has some experience with one.
Thanks!

go to a refrigeration supply store and buy some coil cleaner in a spray bottle. Take filter out side and spray with the coil cleaner. Let sit 5 minutes then hose off and it will look like new money

try vinegar, it should dissolve the hard crusty deposits on the mesh.
