Try a warm compress covered with a towel. Take some anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen every 4-6 hours. Keep taking them for a couple of days to help your neck recover. Your other option is to go get a massage or go to the doctor for a muscle relaxer (Skelaxin - works quickly for me without any big side effects). Try doing neck exercises throughout the day.

Apply hot and cold packs alternatively for 10 mins. You will have considerable relief. Rest your neck. Dont use a large pillow. Roll a towel and place it under your neck when you sleep on your back. Take a pain killer pill. Go to your doctor or take an x-ray to see if you are having cervical spondylosis.

This could be anything from a muscle spasm to meningitis to cervical vertebra damage. Try a mild analgesic/anti-inflammatory (e.g., tyleol, aleve, ibruprofen) coupled with alternating ice and heat. If you have no relief by tomorrow morning, a trip to the doc is in order. Hang in there, ~M~ p.s. If you also have a fever, there is no time to waste. Straight to the doc. NOW.

stretch by trying to touch the side of your head to the shoulder on the side where it is not painful, while pulling the shoulder on the side with the pain downward. do it on the other side too.
if you have muscle relaxant cream (the minty hot/cold stuff that makes you smell like old man) rub that into the area.
just do a lot of stretches that target that area, try rolling your head from side to back and to the same side, then side to front, and to the same side, and then do the same thing at the other side. Never roll your head completely around, could cause more damage than good.
hope it helps!

Moist heat (heating pad) and Motrin. Carefully stretch your neck muscles when it's nice and warm from the heating pad.

Massage it in the shower. Preferably, with a pulsating shower-head and use warm water as you slowly move your head around in circles.
