It's amazing that the youth of today are so happy to regurgitate (or listen to regurgitation) of the music the parents and grandparents liked. I looked at my nephew's myspace site and was shocked to hear the music from a record I bought 25 years ago (I feel like embarassing him by going showing up at one of his punk gigs..). Don't you guys want to have your own music??? I see High Schoolers with Rolling Stones t-shirts on. I guarantee you when I was in HS I wasn't wearing Andrews Sisters t-shirts or other t-shirts from people who made music decades before I was born!! And which is worse? Rock has been regurgitated from 4-5 different 30-40 year old bands, hip hop's "only" been regurgitated for less than 30 years, but is basically regurgitating the exact same song (rapper's delight) which had to steal music from Chic. If "Good times" hadn't been written, rap may not even exist.

So are you ever going to use your imaginations? Or will your children have to be the ones?

By regurgitation I mean the "artists" listened to a bunch of music written before they were born, then tried to mimic it instead of writing something on their own. If the stones had done this they would have written a song that sounded a lot like boogie woogie bugle boy instead of writing satisfaction. If sugar hill gang had done this they would have written a song that sounded a lot like the twist instead of writing rapper's delight.

BB: I didn't mean to imply the stones were original, no offense but I think they're the probably the most overrated band ever. But they were different enough to what came before them so that at least there was some movement musically. From what I overhear on the radio this can't be said of rock bands that are coming out now.

PM Punk: I see no problem with old geezers like us remembering the "good ole days" and listening to our old Black Flag or whatever albums, I'm just surprised so many people who are young enough to be our children are so stuck in the past.

I think you're PARTIALLY right.

I listen to punk- but 70s and early 80s stuff, and that's sort of what you're preaching against. But if I wasn't listening to REAL punk, I'd be listening to the regurgitations (which is a really good word to describe it by the way), and those, frankly, suck a**. Furthermore, I'd listen to old school punk no matter what new, creative style of music came out, because I like it, and I don't give a s*** what anybody says about that...

However I agree that modern music is pretty much copy catting older stuff. There's no originality. We shouldn't be trying to steal past subcultures to create new music. I mean... what's new?

I somewhat agree. You gotta understand that 90% of America's teenagers are utterly helpless against TRENDS and THE MEDIA. "Vintage" and "Indie" are in right now, just like "Grunge" was in when I was a kid, I thought is was the coolest thing in the world. True appreciation of bands like the Stones should be reserved for music snobs, who give a s#!t about rock's roots. I am a total music snob, but I could care less about rock's roots. I have about 400 albums by 250-300 artists and bands that I regularly listen to, not ONE of them is Beatles or The Rolling Stones, and I'm not that Thrilled by Led Zeppelin, either.
So, I agree with you that it's a little foolish to have teenagers act like real fans of bands from the 60's and 70's, I ASSURE you that there are a lot of bands out there keeping it real for people who want contemporary rock, that are regurgitating nothing.

Ignorance. Is it wrong to like music that was aroud 30-40 years ago? I personally think Led Zepplin and The Rolling Stones suck, but that doesn't mean that others can't like it. And people usually like today's music along with oldies. Old bands like that are not my cup of tea, but it is for others. Music generes are always being created through another type. That "regurgitation" can apply to anything else, not just music. Look at movies, cars, clothes! If it was wrong to imitate things, then a lot of things would never have existed.

You say that the Stones were original, yet you bash on me (a 25 year old) for liking them?? Good music is good music, people still listen to Bach & Mozart don't they? I'm not a huge fan of music from the 80's on, because with a few exceptions, it has been crap. The Stones and their contemporaries are legends and innovators of rock just as Mozart is a legend and innovator of classical music. They are who influence the artists now. As for my individual taste, I don't think we've improved on rock since the 60's and 70's, which is one reason I just shelled out for Stones tickets and couldn't be more excited to see them...they're legends!

i'd much rather a high school kid be able to appreciate the rolling stones, otis redding or sex pistols than friggin jessica simpson or paris hilton.

just accept it...there is nothing new under the sun. everything has been done...that goes for movies, music, fashion, books or any other form of entertainment.

if you can think of it...it's been thought of already.

i mean really there isn't anything future generations can do that's not "regurgitation" cause even techno....is just pissy old new wave type crap.

I don't like the regurgitations so much as the originals. It's the youth who go after pop music who are the real doorknobs. What a worthless collection of sound.

Over the years that music is being admired more and more. I don't see what's wrong with liking that music. Everyone has their own tastes, no matter what decade it came from. Who cares??

I don't know what you mean by regurgitation but most music is just sampled

I've always thought that music was made to be appreciated through the generations and meant for just one generation. I love musci from the 40's as well as from today....that's how it should be. If a song is good then it should never die
