I don't know if there is one thing that is the most important....for example...someone said internet but would we have internet without computers, which someone else said....and would we have computers without electricty, which was also said....I don't know....I don't know if you would call this an invention but I think it would be factories....and the systems that they use....I mean the growing population of the world could not survive without industry....and the mass production of the products people use every day. granted many of those products we don't really need, but there are some that we would be lost without such as building materials and food.....But I don't know if you can pick just one because without one there couldn't be another and that chain goes all the way back to the beginning of the human species.

Probably Movable Type,the Printing Press, as this has enabled the dissemination and proliferation of Information and mass communication.Fire was not "Invented", only easier ways to Start it, and utilize it.
