I was called for an interview over the phone to be a copy editor at a magazine publishing co. and right away they asked me what my salary requirements were. I said 32-35,000/yr, and they sounded pretty enthusiastic. I dont want them to think "Awesome! we can pay this guy less than we planned!" When i go for the interview, whens a good time to ask about salary, and if my requirements are on par with what they offer?

If they make you an offer, ask about benefits. If benefits are minimal, then you might be able to ask for more money to make up for it. But if benefits are fairly standard, you're probably stuck with what you originally said.

If you already told them what your requirements for your salary are then I wouldn't change it right now. As they will think your pulling the bate and switch routine. I had a researcher come in and when I asked her what her salary requirements were she said 30K and when I offered her the job at that rate she said she made a mistake and asked for way more money. Needless to say she didn't get hired. When she called me about the job I told her I made a mistake and she no longer met my requirements and I gave the job to someone else. Its not that I wouldn't have payed her the higher salary but I looked at that as being dishonest. Get in there and prove yourself and then ask for a raise. At least it won't look like you are doing the bate and switch. When people do that they usually don't get hired.

You can't do anything about it now because you gave them your expectations now. For the future, make sure you look at how much they are expeciting to pay and go with what you are comfortable with but something that you can live with. If you ask for too much then you're screwing yourself - the company looks at you as a deal. Make sure you go in there confident with the answer that you have for them and the reasons why you feel that you deserve the pay that you are asking them for.

Ask at the end of the interview about salary requirements unless they have gone over them in the interview already. It shows that you are interested in working for them and they should be prepared for that question anyway.

Good luck!!
