The car is parked and the speedometer is sitting on 55mph. When I moved the car the needle moves, but moves between 55-120mph, never back down to zero or actually MPH. I dont have a digital read out, just a plain needle, on a plain Impala.
Side note: My car was hit in the parking lot at work, and it start a day or two after it was hit. MY car was parked and someone else backed into it? not sure if that would cause problem, but I dont understand what could just make that happen like that all of a sudden. pleaase help.

Damaged speedo cable. Have it replaced.

The speedo in this vehicle is electronically operated and does not use a cable. (even a broken cable would not make a speed get stuck because when a cable in not turning the needle falls no matter what) You most likely have a speedo head, sensor or electronic problem.

Still own a shop

Sell the car or trade it in. The problem is it's a Cavalier. If the speedometer is the only problem, it's just the beginning. Wait a little longer and you'll find all sorts of new problems.

04 impalas don't have speedo cables, most cars quit that in the early ninetys. and a bad sensor couldn't do it either. you need a new cluster, its gonna cost you alot, and it wasnt caused by the accident. theres the truth with no bullshit attached. if your lucky a reprogram might fix it but only a dealer can tell you that.

sounds like the cable or the vehicle speed sensor...but if the need is still moving up and don't doesn't sound like the cable is broke.

Same thing happened in my Ford Taurus. See if it's a recall and if it is, get it fixed under warranty.

sounds like the bump made the cable skip up. Go to the dealership or your trusted repairman fix it.
