It makes no sense to me. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand the other half of the USA hating a group of people who preach love. Why start fights with people who work for peace? Why the desire to kill a group of people who believe in non-violence?
Are people just being deliberately contrary to be irritating, or is there a purpose?

People tend to fear that which they do not (or cannot) understand, and more than anything else, the people in question fear true freedom. Hippies (whether they actualize these ideals or not) represent freedom and love, and there is nothing more threatening to a closed mind than these two things.

Although I highly doubt the existence of a person who has the rabid hatred of hippies as that cartoon character from South Park, Eric Cartman, I think it has lot to do with their alleged activities. These people weren't only preaching love and all...they were all dopers, crack addicts and all....these people weren't the usual type of dopers like we see today, sitting in rooms and drooling....they used to walk around half stoned and preach ideas in return hoping to get laid. Such behaviour was definitely odd in a 1960's america, while the whole of america was just getting out o WWII, and it's probably still seen as out of place today, because we're too cold to realise the meaning of it anymore.

In my area there are a lot of cowboys who seem to think hippies have poor hygiene (funny, coming from them), but I've never met anyone who really hated hippies, or had violent tendencies toward that particular subculture. Like you said, they're hard to hate.

I think this is very rare. Maybe you're overreacting to an isolated incident.

There is no purpose in hating anyone. Hatred takes away from the person doing the hating.

I know that is pretty ugly of people to be so hateful. Hippies are people too. People will always hate whats different.

You can believe and aspire to be peaceful and loving. However, there is evil in this world. If you do not stand up to it (as in Iraq) then you will be subjugated.

Freedom is not free. It is won by strength and the willingness to defend it. May god bless our men & women in the armed services that protect us all.

Agree. The Golden Rule is: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And for that very reason, hurting a pacifist seems very wrong.

It's just the Neo-Cons. They're like Neo-Nazis. Ignore them.

Though they will never admit it, even to themselves, it is rooted in jealousy. People are jealous.
