First thing to do is decide if you want your own domain name (www.yourname.com) or fee a dubdomain name ( usually free, like www.theirname.yours.com). If you want your own name, you have to buy hosting and a domain name. Try http://.afmu.com, they offer several hosting packages and when you buy one you buy the domain name at the same time. If you want a free option try http://freewebs.com http://150.com.

Then, you need to build your site, do you know html? If not, I suggest you learn it, if you build your site from scratch and hand code it, the code is alot simpler and search bots love it. If you want to do this, learn html here http://w3schools.com then learn css from the same site, then you can build a basic site using notepad or one of the purpose built html editors like http://htmlkit.com while doing this I suggest learning JavaScript from http://w3schools.com to add interactivity to your site.

If you don't want to learn html, you can use a WYSIWYG editor, http://freewebs.com do one to build your site for yo, wysiwyg is a "drag and drop" program, there are hundreds out there. Just drag the element you want onto the page and poition it. If you want to be a professional designer though, I erge you to learn html, css and javascript, and then go and learn more. It is more professional and you know EXACTLY what each thing does and you can change it how you want.

When you have built your site, you have to upload it, many hosts offer a browser upload or ftp (file transfer protocool) for more instructions, look at your hosts site.

This is the basics, go to your local libary and pick up a book on the subject, there are many and will give you a better lesson than anyone here can.

Good luck, email me with any problems and send me a link to the site! My email is .. englishwolf92@yahoo.co.uk

Find somewhere that gives a few megabytes of web hosting (there are loadsa organisations that do this, just search the net). Some of the more established hosts will offer online tools for building simple sites, but if you want to do anything funky you'll want to look for those hosts that allow you to upload HTML documents you've created offline. These hosts will usually allow you access to FTP - and they often go some way to explaining the process to you.

For creating your site offline just hunt down one of the many free HTML editors (they're available for most OSs, like Windows, Linux and Mac). Just install it and dig in. Try search alt.comp.freeware on Google News for a list of decent free HTML editors.

If your HTML (Hypertext MarkUp Language - the language used for laying out web pages) isn't up to scratch then you'll not have a problem finding other web sites that'll explain pretty much everything you'd want to know.

One final point: many of the sites you'll come across (and hope to emulate) use scripting via the likes of ASP (Microsoft's Active Server Pages), Perl or PHP. However, finding a free host that offers any of this isn't so easy. Maybe they'll offer a few scripts, sure, but they generally won't give you the opportunity to create and install scripts either that you find lurking around the net or create yourself.

There is an alternative though... Just set up a web server on your own machine and you have all the freedom you'd ever need. Add to that a static - and free! - IP address from www.no-ip.org - and you'll be all set to host your own server.

Sweet.

I would suggest getting a Visual Quickstart Guide on HTML or XHTML along with some CSS (Cascading Style Sheets -- for changing the visual layout of the web page). A good book to help you get started in web design is Elizabeth Castro's "HTML for the World Wide Web: 5th Edition", which is published by Peachpit Press (although I just saw that they have released a sixth version of the book just about 13 days ago). A link for the book is in the source citation.

If you don't want to buy the book, you could also try an extremely good resource for HTML and CSS on the web site of the Wed Design Group (again, in the source citation).

you can start by getting a web host such as geocities.com or angelfire.com, they are both free. Geocities is alot easier to work with if it's your first site.
